Epic Everyday: Dinner and Movie at Home

Dear Urban Apartment Dwellers, Having people over for dinner is one of my favorite things on earth. I’m becoming a crochety old man you can’t take anywhere. Every new restaurant I try out seems to be louder and more sceney than the last. Also, if I go to one more tapas or shared plate restaurant I’m going to scream. If I wanted to serve things myself or try to split one meatball seven ways I would just do that at home. Thank you. As you may have seen on my Instagram, I’ve teamed up with American Express to share ideas…

A Midsummer Night’s Color Scheme

Blush Pink Outdoor Dining Grid

Source: Homepolish Dear Summer, I always kind of think of summer as June, July, and August, but over my years in LA I’ve come to understand that summer starts in May and ends in October. For this reason, I’ve realized there’s still time to up my outdoor hosting game before the season ends. IT’S NOT TOO LATE YOU GUYS! So I’ve decided to share some of my favorite summer hosting items with you. BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE. Three of my favorite trends of the year are blush pink, metallic finishes, and indigo blue. I know what you’re thinking, trends are…

Predicting the Future of Design on Architectural Digest

Photograph by Tessa Neustadt Courtesy Homepolish Dear Crystal Ball, Are you curious what the future holds for the world of interior design? Will shibori take over where ikat left off? Will people get tired of all these white walls and go crazy painting everything in bold, saturated color? And will everyone finally get rid of those “Keep Calm and Carry On” posters? Find out the answers to these questions and more in my latest collaboration with Architectural Digest. Love, Orlando READ FULL STORY HERE >>>

Dream Come True: New Hommemaker Editor is an Insanely Talented Ceramist!

Photography by Jess Diab Dear Working Momz, Between shuttling the kids I don’t have to nonexistent soccer practice, preparing an imagined dinner for the husband I don’t have, and balancing all that all with the actual job I actually have, I’ve been spread a little too thin to work as much on this site as I’d like. One of my favorite things about Homepolish is how engaging and exciting my job is. But the problem with something being engaging and exciting is that it doesn’t leave you much time to do other stuff. This is why I came to the…

This Week At Homepolish

Dear Reader, I kinda feel like the apocalypse has arrived. Over the weekend I went camping with some friends. We awoke in the morning to beautiful flakes falling from the sky. It was magical, but also terrifying. The flakes were ashes from a nearby wildfire. Since the air was thick with smoke and we couldn’t breathe, we hightailed it out of there and headed back to Los Angeles. In a non-shocking turn of events the skies above Los Angeles were orange and filled with wildfire pollutants. The smoke from the fire (in the Angeles Forest, where we had been camping)…

A Colorful Home Office for YouTube’s Joey Graceffa

Dear Design Diary, It seems sometimes like the internet is a never-ending hole of content. People are posting links on Facebook that come from sites I’ve never heard of. Like political stories that seem important but come from sites with names like rawstory.com (is that a legit site? How would I know? WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ACTUAL EDITORIAL INTEGRITY?). Even sites like the New York times are using clickbait titles for their articles. EVERYONE HAS LOST THEIR MINDS. If finding pertinent political information is this hard, finding quality design content can be equally challenging. This is why I’ve decided to start…

A Personal Art Moment in My Master Bedroom

Photographs by Orlando Soria Dear Diary, For some reason last night, I started thinking about my first apartment in LA. So I did some self-googling and found an old picture of it on this blog: I moved into that place in 2007. What I love about looking at this picture is how creative and thrifty everything is. At this point in my life I had literally zero dollars. Everything in in the photograph is either a hand-me-down, handmade, or from Ikea. But I took pride in that space and I think it was really cozy and happy and homey. One of…

Taking a Hollywood Hills House from Flab to Fab

Photographs by Tessa Neustadt Courtesy Homepolish Dear Home Renovation Lovers, One of my favorite projects was covered in some of my favorite publications (Architectural Digest and Homepolish Magazine!). But what you might not have seen in these publications is the SUPER DRAMATIC transformation this house underwent. I have to admit, Donnie and Ryan (the adorable couple featured above) had a great contractor who did the lion’s share of the work. But I was around to wave my Homepolish magic wand, making final decisions on finishes, wall-color, and obviously, furniture. Below is a mouth-watering collection of before and after pictures that…

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly at My Beach House Renovation

Photographs by Tessa Neustadt Courtesy Homepolish Dear Diary, If I had to make a list of my very favorite things to do in the entire world, looking at before and after pictures of houses would probably be near the top. There’s something insanely satisfying about looking at a gorgeous interior photograph and then looking at a totally ugly picture of what it used to look like. It’s like, no matter how pretty the after photo is, it’s always prettier in contrast to the revolting before picture. This is why when I meet people for the first time, I like to show…

Creating a Happy Place Part II: Finishing Touches!

Dear Sleep Lovers, I recently teamed up with Cocoon by Sealy to spruce up my guest bedroom as part of their “My Happy Place” campaign. The timing was perfect, because I’m getting ready to (finally) do the full reveal of the Orcondo renovation and the guest bedroom was the one room that still felt lacking in polish. As a reminder, this is what the glamorous (and super comfy) mattresses that sparked the whole makeover look like: The master bedroom at my condo is pretty dark and romantic (that’s a designer way of saying it get’s like no natural light). The guest…

One Room Challenge: Week Five

Photography By Orlando Soria, Brooke Spreckman, and Bethany Nauert Dear Construction Diary, With one week to go in the One Room Challenge, I’ve still got lots to do. Luckily, the interior walls are all painted and all we have left is the fun part. FURNITURE. At one point in my life I really wanted to start a line of furniture and call it FUN-ITURE. But Then I realized that was stupid and someone probably did it already. Anyway, I love choosing colors and doing construction-oriented design stuff, but my true love is plopping furniture into a space and finally making…

San Clemente Beach House Gets A Mega Makeover!

Photograph by Tessa Neustadt Courtesy Homepolish Dear Bikini Body, Just kidding, I don’t have a bikini body. I’ve been traveling a lot for work, which means my current body resembles a piece of Hawaiian pizza someone threw in the garbage because it was disgusting, which has been sitting there for two weeks and is now covered in toxic mold. BUT! Hark! My work travel ends for at least a month next week and I will have time to be home in Los Angeles, partaking in the LA pastime that brings us together as a community: eating tons of salads and working…

Creating a Happy Place: Cozying Up The Guest Bedroom

Photographs by Tessa Neustadt Dear Sleepyhead, Ask my boyfriend, I am pretty bad at falling asleep. Bedtime normally involves me wiggling around for hours and hours thinking about all the things I did wrong today, all the stuff I forgot to do, and being filled with dread about all the ways I’ve ruined my life over the course of the day. My neuroses are amplified by laying down to go to sleep. So I was excited when Cocoon by Sealy invited me to create a Happy Place to sleep in honor of the release of their new Cocoon by Sealy line…

One Room Challenge: Week Three

Dear Construction Diary, Things are moving pretty quickly on my One Room Challenge Treehouse project. The biggest change is that we’ve added plywood walls everywhere, boxing in the formerly-exposed posts and making the whole interior look a lot more finished. The reason we didn’t do drywall in here is that it’s not completely safe from the elements (there is a small bit of leakage around the tree trunk which we are tying to fix with a sealant but we’ll get to that later). We’ve also finished the railing on the loft and even added trim around the windows. And by “we”…

One Room Challenge: Week One

Header Photo by Bethany Nauert Courtesy Homepolish Dear Reader, One time I went to summer camp. My mother had this idea that it would be super fun for my sister and I to go to art camp. She’d always wanted to go to camp as a kid but never had the chance. In the grand tradition of mothers trying to do nice things for their kids, of course summer camp was the worst experience of our young lives. Unbeknownst to us, the camp was run by religious zealots and all the campers were rabidly insane. A few memories are kids…
